Bigger isn’t always better.
For example, it’s amazing how much performance you can get out of small-form-factor builds with cards such as the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 Mini paired with Mini-ITX motherboards such as the ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming Z170.
Powerful, small, and quiet — if that’s what you’re looking for, then you’ve found it in the ZOTAC GTX 1060 Mini.
The 1060 Mini won’t outperform something such as the GTX 1080 Titan. However, considering the 1060 Mini is a fraction of the Titan’s size, the 1060 Mini could be an excellent solution for someone who wants a high-performance card but doesn’t have room for a giant, power hungry beast in their build.
The 1060 Mini is compact at 174mm long, and it should easily fit in any case that supports ITX motherboards. The 1060 Mini is the smaller version of the GTX 1060 AMP!, which is essentially the same card as the 1060 Mini but with copper pipe cooling and two fans.
Though the AMP! is about $20 more, it might be a better solution for someone who lives in an area with high temperatures or who consistently overheats their cards on a regular basis. But if cooling isn’t an issue and you want to go small, you can get virtually identical performance from the Mini.
Both of ZOTAC’s GTX 1060 cards feature a single 6-pin PCIe connector for power and a custom PCB. Just like the GTX 1060 Founders Edition, the I/O consists of three DisplayPort connectors, an HDMI 2.0 connector, and a dual-link DVI connector. Another HDMI output would be nice, but the card still provides plenty of options for connecting your display of choice.

The GTX 1060 Mini is small, but how does it perform compared to other GTX 1060 GPUs? People are saying that it overclocks well and stays cool for a card with only an aluminum heatsink and one 90mm fan. At a core clock of 1506 MHz and a boost clock of 1708 MHz, it’s more than capable of handling games such as The Witcher 3 with settings on ultra.
With 6GB of 192-bit GDDR5 memory, it’s not a surprise that the GTX 1060 Mini is VR ready. The card’s small form factor could be great for someone who wants a portable VR machine that can easily be hooked up anywhere. It’s quiet too; it utilizes a feature that detects the thermal conditions of the the card and will shut off the fan when the GPU is cool enough to function without it.
Powerful, small, and quiet — if that’s what you’re looking for, then you’ve found it in the ZOTAC GTX 1060 Mini.
As with most design quibbles, the card’s looks are subjective. However, some people have complained that the card and the shroud feel a bit cheap when compared to something such as EVGA’s GTX 1060 SC, which is similar in price and size to the GTX 1060 Mini.
Additionally — like all GTX 1060s — the GTX 1060 Mini doesn’t support SLI, which is probably not an issue if you’re using an ITX board. However, it’s an important thing to be aware of if you like running more than one card at a time.
We paired the GTX 1060 Mini with the ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 ITX motherboard because of its focus on gaming and the wealth of features that sometimes make you forget it’s not full ATX. The board supports six SATA 6Gb/s — two of which are part of a SATA Express port — USB 3.1 type-A and type-C, and six USB 3.0. In addition, the board has three fan headers as opposed to the usual two supported by most ITX boards.
Another cool fact about the Z170 is that it has an M.2 slot, so you can keep your SSD as small as the rest of your build. The Z170 also has a reputation for good overclocking, strong memory, and solid VRMs at a reasonable price of $184.99. Between the Z170 and the ZOTAC 1060 Mini, you might forget you’re going for an SFF build because performance will be huge.
For SFF enthusiasts, this card could be a perfect fit — in more ways than one. For $250, it’s a very reasonable purchase for someone who wants to enter the GTX 1060 market. If you’re using a mid-tower or full-tower case it might make more sense to go with ZOTAC’s GTX 1060 AMP! for the additional cooling, and for someone in that situation the slightly higher cost is probably worth it.
But for those of us who thrive on fitting a lot of power into small spaces, the GTX 1060 Mini delivers. Coupled with the Fatal1ty or similar ITX board and a high-powered Intel Core i7 CPU, you’ll be able to run pretty much all AAA games at 60 frames-per-second in 1080p in a build that’s highly portable.
Like our compact ITX VR build, the GTX 1060 Mini would be a fantastic way to get into VR.

It’s amazing how much power these smaller cards can provide, and we think it’s great that companies such as ZOTAC offer options for people who want to get their hands on the power of a GTX 1060 but are tight on space. For that, the GTX 1060 Mini delivers.

NVIDIA’s tenth gen assault is well underway with the latest 1060 graphics card landing today. Unfortunately, GTX 1060 samples are even harder to find than 1080s at launch. The good news is the guys at ZOTAC hooked us up with their $279 GTX 1060 AMP! card for a hot minute. And by “hot minute” I mean a couple hours a few days ago. And since NVIDIA hadn’t released demo drivers by that point, we didn’t even get to play with the new 16nm GPU in the real world. I guess we're stuck using the 1080 AMP! Extreme pictured below. It's hard to be a reviewer.
First, the launch of the 1060 is different than the previous 1070 or 1080. This time around, the GTX 1060 Founders Edition is only available on NVIDIA's website for $299, or $50 more than the $249+ custom designs from GPU makers. Also, the Founders Edition, like the 1070 and 1080 FE models, is a blower style card rather than the fancy fan models you really want.
What’s interesting about the GTX 1060 (other than the performance, naturally) is how freaking small it is. The ZOTAC version is barely more than 8” long. Compare that to their 13” AMP! EXTREME card pictured below. And the 8” is the standard version, there’s also a dwarf version at 6.5”. This is seriously small territory. Some of the other 1060 fan designs, including the FE model, run 12' like a big boy card. But the PCB itself is only around 8' making this perfect for SSF builds.
When I first saw the new ZOTAC 1060 I was like “It’s so cute!” And then ZOTAC told me that’s what all the girls at the office said. Yeah, I guess I was supposed to comment on the GPU’s carbon fiber battle armor or something.
I will say that ZOTAC is rapidly becoming my favorite GPU manufacturer in the looks department. The ZOTAC card is one of the most aggressive (and expensive) designs out there. The carbon and metal look mimicks more expensive machined metal styling. To my eyes, the ZOTAC feels like a level above most of the competition's black plastic designs. I think it’s time to put ZOTAC GPUs in direct competition with the big dogs. At least, I think they're spending the coin to get people to notice. It's working for me.

Back to size -- I popped the 1060 is a tiny Silverstone Milo ML08 case to get a feeling for an upcoming portable VR build. The Milo is a mini mini ITX case barely larger than a first gen XBox. But the ZOTAC is so small it makes this ITX case look huge. For SSF fans with NCases or SG13s or any manner of bitty boxes, the 1060 is going to be a new champ.

As for performance, the 16nm Pascal architecture found in the 1060 is about half the power of the GTX 1080. That means 1280 CUDA Cores vs the 2560 found in the GTX 1080. The required power is around 120w compared to 150w for the 1070 and 180w for the 1080.
Finally, the 1060 runs with 6GB DDR5 RAM vs the 8GB of the 1070 and 1080.
The downside is the 1060 is said to be incompatible with SLI (at least in its current form). So no doubling up on 1060s expecting single 1080 performance.
But word on the street is the 1060 is more powerful than the GTX 980 which, until a month ago, would run you $500. So $250 for $500 performance is a pretty good deal in my book.
